The Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS) at the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) is at the forefront of cutting-edge research in a diverse array of fields. Our research areas include MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), digital communities, artscience and STEAM, learning management systems, instructional technologies, and art and digital humanities. We also focus on applied spatial computing, the Internet of Things, AI-based pedagogies in Open and Distance Learning (ODL), and explainable artificial intelligence. Other key areas of study include educational communication, learning and academic analytics in ODL, data science for development, knowledge management, multimedia publishing, organizational communication, intercultural communication, user experience and user interface research, critical digital literacy, development communication theory, immersive open pedagogies, cybersecurity, multimedia-enhanced teaching and learning, and crowdsourcing and human computing.
