Alice Sarmiento
Assistant Professor, Multimedia Studies
Alice Sarmiento is a feminist, animal welfare advocate, and occasional seamstress with a practice in writing, art criticism, and curation. She finished her Bachelor’s degree in Clothing Technology at the University of the Philippines and went on to teach at the same program while obtaining her Master’s in Curatorial Studies at the same University. She has completed fellowships in curation from the Japan Foundation Asia Center in 2015 and the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in 2021, as well as in Cultural Journalism from Akademie Schloss-Solitude in 2019 and Art, Theory, and Criticism from Kunstlerhaus Buchsenhausen in 2023. Alice has curated exhibitions with support from the Japan Foundation Asia Center and Fondazione Sandretto Rebaudengo, and through commissions from the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art. She was part of the curatorial team of the 2018 Manila Biennale and curatorial lead for the visual arts exhibtiion of the 2023 Visayas Visual Arts Exhibition and Conference (VIVA ExCon), titled Suba sa Iraya, in San Jose and Sibalom, Antique. She contributes critical writing on art and popular culture to Rappler and has written for Viscose Journal, IDEAS: The Journal for the Asia Art Archive, and Plaridel. Alice is also a senior volunteer and adoption counselor for the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) in Quezon City and among the directors of Best Friends Furever Animal Sanctuary, Inc. (BFFS) in Pampanga.
