Asst. Prof. Katrina Joy Abriol-Santos of the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS) continues to demonstrate the impact of ICT in agriculture and public service through her role as Web Application Development Consultant in a DOST-PCAARRD-funded project titled “Operationalization of the Swine Breed Registry System in the Philippines.”
The project, implemented by the Institute of Animal Science (IAS) at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) led by Dr. Elpidio M. Agbisit, Jr., in partnership with the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) and the Accredited Swine Breeders Association of the Philippines (ASBAP), aims to establish a national swine breed registry. This system is a major step toward enhancing livestock data management and genetic traceability in the country.
Although she is now with FICS, Asst. Prof. Abriol-Santos was previously part of the original project team during her time at UPLB. She was invited back to support the technical implementation phase of the Philippine Swine Breed Registry (PSBR) system, highlighting her expertise in solution architecture and digital systems design.
During a workshop held on 22-23 April 2025 organized by the project team conducted at the UPOU headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna, Asst. Prof. Abriol-Santos presented the PSBR web application, which facilitates two core processes: the Litter Registration process and the Purebred Performance Tested Swine Registration process. These modules are vital to documenting and certifying swine lineage and performance data nationwide.
She also conducted a hands-on training session with participants from swine breeder farms, the Swine Breeder Farm Accreditation Program (SBFAP) Technical Working Group, BAI, ASBAP, and the Swine Genomics Project. The training not only equipped users to adopt the system smoothly but also gathered valuable feedback to improve its usability and functionality.
Asst. Prof. Abriol-Santos is currently collaborating closely with the ICT units of BAI and ASBAP in preparation for the eventual turnover of the system’s management to these agencies.
Her contribution highlights the role of FICS faculty in applying information and communication technologies to support initiatives in agriculture, public service, and national development.
