COURSE TITLE: Fundamentals of Information Technology

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Introduction to technologies that are used to create, store, exchange, and use information

COURSE GOAL:

At the end of the course, the students should:

  • Gain knowledge on the hardware and software component of the computer system;
  • Understand the Internet and technologies developed; and
  • Appreciate IT-related laws in the Philippines.

COURSE OUTLINE:

  • Define and discuss information technology, computer technology and telecommunication technology
  • Trace the evolution of computers
  • Explain the fetch-decode-execute cycle of instruction execution
  • Identify the different components of the CPU and describe their functions
  • Explain the roles of the different types of memories, input/output systems and buses that may be present in a computer system
  • Identify the other peripheral devices that may be used in a computer system
  • Define what an operating system is
  • Trace the history of operating systems
  • Discuss the nature of the other systems software
  • Survey the different applications of computers
  • Differentiate one computer application from another
  • Discuss the different networks in existence
  • Identify the different network protocols and topologies
  • Identify the different network hardware and cabling
  • Discuss how data are transmitted through a communication channel
  • Define the Internet and discuss its services
  • Discuss how web servers work
  • Discuss the different issues related to computer ethics
  • Differentiate what is an ethical act and what is not
