FICS embarks on string of local and international events to bolster expertise

Geeks on a Beach

FICS faculty members attended Geeks on a Beach (GOAB 2013) last September 26 – 28 at Boracay Regency.

Asst. Prof Al Francis Librero, Asst. Prof. Joyce Manalo, Asst. Prof Diego Maranan, Asst. Prof Reinald Pugoy and Senior Lecturer Roberto Figueroa Jr. participated in different presentations and workshops about entrepreneurship and building a startup tech company. Aside from the Main conference, there was also a breakfast session for women wherein the female participants discussed the state of e-commerce in the country, and a workshop/presentation by Amazon AWS. ICEM 2013

Dr. Melinda Bandalaria, Asst. Prof Ria Mae Borromeo and Asst. Prof Al Francis Librero attended the 63rd Annual Conference of the International Council for Educational Media (ICEM 2013) last October 1-4 at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

Dr. Bandalaria, Prof Borromeo and Prof Librero presented their papers entitled “Collaboration in Online Courses: Drawing Insights from the Learners for Effective Course Design”, “Online Learning With Games: the UPOU Setting”, and “Online Examination for Distance Educators”, respectively. Dr. Bandalaria also participated as International Programme Advisory Panel member.


ICDE 2013

Dr. Bandalaria also attended ICDE 2013 in Tianjin, China along with Senior Lecturer Benhur Viray. According to the website The ICDE World Conference on Open and Distance Education is widely recognized as the leading world event in open and distance education and offers a forum for the presentation of cutting edge developments, network building, and professional development.

Dr. Bandalaria presented her paper “MOOC- to MOOC+:  Applying the ODeL Quality Framework to Fill the Gaps”, and Mr. Viray presented his paper “Collaborative Learning through Online Communities of Practice (OCoPs) at the UP Open University.”


e-Learn2013: World Conference on e-Learning (Special Pre-conference)

Three members of the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies attended the Special Pre Conference Symposium on MOOCs and Open Education Around the world (for the e-Learn2013: World Conference on e-Learning) last  October 21, 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

FICS Dean Dr. Melinda Bandalaria along with Asst. Prof Ria Borromeo and Asst. Prof Al Francis Librero presented their papers on MOOCs. The three have been actively involved in the development and have conducted research on the FICS MOOCs portal @RAL.

Dr. Curtis Bonk, keynote speaker last ICODEL 2012, was one of the organizers of the symposium.


Plymouth University events on cognition

Asst. Prof. Diego Maranan attended as a speaker in one of Plymouth University’s series of talks last November 6, 2014.

His talk was about how technology has influenced creative, embodied practices in urban dance styles by analyzing how technological metaphors underlie conceptual representations of the body, space, and movement in three related styles of urban dance: liquid, digitz, and finger tutting.


ERT International Symposium

FICS Administrative Officer Emely Amoloza, presented her paper entitled "Initiatives on Teacher Development in the Philippines: The UPOU FICS Experience” at the 4th Education for Rural Transformation (ERT) International Symposium 2013 on “Research-Based Evidence of Good Practice” held last November 18-20, 2013 at Kasetsart University in Bangkok, Thailand.
